Is Music Sharing Profitable? Or Was David Galper Wrong?

One of the biggest questions amongst those employed by the music industry today is whether or not online music sharing is profitable or appropriate. Over the past decade or so, several websites have been created in order to allow users to upload and download music that they had obtained from other sources.

Many of these sites were quickly shut down. The government ruled that those who had purchased albums did not have the legal right to share them with others who had not paid in a way that produced duplicate copies of the work (ie. downloading). Sites were destroyed, those sharing music were fined, and those looking for affordable alternatives quickly found themselves in a lurch.

The Ruckus Network

Enter David Galper and Vince Han, creators of the Ruckus Network. In the early 2000’s, the two partners collaborated to form a music sharing network that would allow college students to have free access to an online library of music. They contracted with universities around the country to give current students free access, while alumni and graduates received access for a low monthly charge.

Within a year, the network was sold and subsequently shut down – leaving users and music aficionados with two questions. Why did Ruckus fail and is music sharing really profitable?

The Benefits of Music Sharing

While that first question may never have an answer, the answer to the second question has, over the past few years, become crystal clear. Music sharing can be very profitable for both site owners and artists – if handled properly.

Music sharing allows artists to increase exposure to their music, without forcing new listeners to buy entire albums they may not like and, subsequently, return. Even the free samples given out by some music sharing networks do lead to profit. Studies have shown that listeners who download free music are very likely to purchase the album put out by artists who have released sample tracks.

Music sharing increases the accessibility of music to listeners from around the world. The online music market suddenly grows from one country to anywhere where an artist can be appreciated. Because there are now so many different models for file sharing legally, the illegal methods are slowly going by the wayside. Music is now accessible to the masses – at a rate just about anyone can afford.

David Galper had the right idea when he created the Ruckus Network. Perhaps it was ill-timed, and maybe it wasn’t as carefully cared for as it could have been, but one fact remains true. Online music sharing is one industry that may never die.

Ode To A File Share

Click Here for Your Special Offer !!

Not sure how to create a pivot-table in Excel? You don’t know how to put together a PowerPoint presentation? Sparky! This is where a file sharing program would come in handy. And you laughed at those of us who bothered to show up to Information Systems class. Youd think file sharing would be rather self-explanatory. You have files " you want to share them. Simple enough, to be sure, but the file sharing world is rife with scoundrels. Be sure you take precautions and install credible software from credible vendors.

These day, your typical file sharing network is based on the peer-to-peer model. What if youre peerless, you say? You imp. Shape up " and pay attention. A file sharing network will allow multiple people to access the same file. So, if your department has one monthly report, everyone on the team can access and modify the document.

A major benefit of the peer-to-peer model, or P2P as we insiders call it, is the fact you arent required to load one file in order to access another. None of his quid pro quo business around here. That is not to say anyone can access anyones files. Your peers may only allow certain files, folders, or drives to be accessed. You wouldnt want anyone to be able to go poking around in your financial statements or folder full of love letters to Ozzy Osborn now would you? Your MP3s are an entirely different matter " I always thought you had great taste in music.

Another perk of the file sharing phenomenon is the access. Approved peers can access a file from any computer anywhere in the world. Is your boss in Frankfurt? Did he forget his report? No worries, move the file to a shared drive or folder and he can access it instantly " is the speed of light instantaneous? Well, its fast enough. And if he or she ask you to modify the report, you simply open it, clean up your messy handiwork, save it, and give him the heads up.

After the IT guy installs your file sharing software, make sure the program has some kind of search capability. If it doesn’t grab the IT guy by his fanny pack and get him to uninstall it. Picture a hellish scenario where youre not sure where your boss left the report. Now, picture having to search through each folder and drive. Now, picture yourself at the unemployment office. Always make sure you have access to a search function. Indeed, some file sharing programs dont and they should be avoided like the plague. So, stay frosty and start sharing wisely.

Satellite Internet – What You Need to Know About File Sharing

Click Here for Your Special Offer !!

For people who live in rural or remote parts of the country where DSL and cable Internet services are not available, satellite Internet broadband has been a true lifesaver. Advances in satellite technology over recent years have made it possible for rural residents to get access to the same broadband connection speeds as people living in more densely populated areas. These connection speeds, of course, brings with them the ability to do a number of things that are not possible or efficient to do with the slow connection speeds that come with your typical dial-up service.

These things include everything from checking email more quickly, to streaming video and music content, to downloading software updates, to working and earning a degree and shopping from home, to chatting with friends and family on the other side of the world using VoIP software like Skype, to file sharing. Regardless of whether it is DSL, cable, or satellite Internet service that you use, with broadband connection speeds, you may feel like you can do just about anything you want. And, while this may be at least partially true, you must remember that not all of these things that you may want to do are things that you should do. This is especially important to keep in mind when it comes to file sharing.

File sharing allows people to access or download files from other people’s computers over the Internet. It is a cooperative process that depends on people linking into a network to post or upload their own files so that they are available for other people to download. Sometimes this is done through a social networking site, and other times it is done using peer-to-peer software.

The latter method of file sharing is especially popular on college campuses, where everyone is logged onto the same network. It is also quite controversial, particularly when it comes to the legality of sharing copyrighted material. If you are thinking about taking advantage of the fast connection speeds of your DSL, cable, or satellite broadband service to file share copyrighted material (by either downloading or uploading said material), you should know that doing so without permission is illegal. Since the person downloading is not paying for this material, or is not paying the proper person for this material, this is actually considered stealing.

What is not illegal is using file sharing techniques to share material that is not copyrighted, or material to which you own the rights. And a lot of non-professional and hopeful artists are using such forums for publicity reasons, to get their own work out there and be heard or seen. Thus, if you are an aspiring artist, having a DSL, cable, or satellite broadband connection can be good for your career.

When it comes to file sharing, really the most important thing to remember is to be cautious. Keep in mind that if you can be held responsible for illegally distributing as well as downloading copyrighted material, regardless of whether you are breaking the law knowingly or unintentionally. So, by all means, take advantage of the lightning-fast connection speeds available these days through DSL, cable, and satellite Internet services, but limit yourself to legal activities.

The Ethics Of P2p Peer To Peer File Sharing

Click Here for Your Special Offer !!

Peer to peer file sharing is regarded as either illegal theft of artists’ work or a fair return to listeners or viewers for the money they have paid to get these artists where they are. Which side you take is dependant on whether you are a drug addled artist or a consumer sick of being ripped off for pieces of overpriced plastic or tape.

Do not take me the wrong way here, since not all artists and actors are drug ridden, but many are. Many others do a fine job, but we are still paying for the excesses of what I consider to be the majority, not the minority.

Most people take a middle view, and can understand the frustration of artists and movie makers whose work is being downloaded without payment being made. However, they also understand the view of the consumer, who has paid a considerable sum of money over the years to stars who live a lifestyle far in excess of their abilities. It is that unfairness that prompts many people to take the view that pop and film stars have earned enough from the hard working masses, and should not complain when some use a perfectly legal software system to download some of their so-called ‘work’, albeit illegally.

Peer to peer file sharing software is not illegal: it is the way that we use it that is illegal. Many new acts do not complain when we download their work, since that gives them publicity, but once they become famous and they no longer need us, then they complain. That, to me, is hypocrisy though I am willing to listen to the arguments of those who disagree.

It seems strange that bands that were unheard of until they offered free downloads of their work take law suits against the fans that got them to the top for downloading their music. Does that make sense? Or am I missing something? To me, they are nothing but prats that should crawl back to the hole the crept out of.

Many take the view that as long as those who make money from the music and film industry continue to break the laws of most countries in the world and get away with it, then what rights should they have to complain when others do the same, but in a less socially disruptive fashion.

Sure, it is certainly true that breach of copyrig 1000 ht is illegal. By definition, therefore, it is illegal for people to use p2p file sharing software to download music and movie files that are protected by copyright. However, which is the greater offence: to download a copyright file or to deliberately break the drugs laws of your country of residence, or of the country you are visiting, and escape the appropriate punishment because your are ‘a star’?

Most of us know the answer to that, so as long as the stars break the law, then they should stop bleating about us doing the same and keep it shut until they conform. Once they conform, then we might too. Until then, however, the morality of the situation is that we are trying our level best to help them by cutting their income to a minimum so that they can no longer afford to buy drugs using our money. We will no longer pay for their rubbish music, and let’s face it, most new music these days is total crap, until they clean up their acts and start to set our kids an example that they would be proud to set their own kids.

Until then we will continue to share our best movies and music tracks throughout our networks. We are members of clubs, and as such, we have the industry’s welfare at heart. After all, without them we would have nothing to listen to or to watch. We would have nothing to copy or watch illegally. Once they are clean, then we will become clean.

We have banded together, and will stay banded together, to ensure that we help these drug-ridden stars by depleting them of the resource to purchase drugs and booze so that they will be more able to provide decent movies and music to our children in the future by being clean and working with clear heads. Surely that is an aspiration to be applauded. We are providing a social service and should be commended, not prosecuted.

That is why P2P should be provided with government grants and not hounded. We are not only doing good to the stars by showing them the error of their ways, but are helping the future of the children of our respective nations.

File Sharing and Document Management Under Joomla

Click Here for Your Special Offer !!

Use your personal space in your favorite Joomla site. How? With lightning-like speed you jump onto a colleague’s computer and pull up your personal hard drive on your community website. Log onto your account with a unique user name and password and bingo, your files come up on the screen.

Remote file backups Everyone knows they should back up their files, but most people keep their computer and backup files in the same place.

Ever wonder what would happen if your computer and your backup files get destroyed by fire, flood or theft? Large corporations spend big money to keep their files archived on remote servers "just in case". Now you can do the same thing with your vital files at no cost.

File sharing between users

Do you enjoy waiting for huge files to upload or download through your e-mail program? Nobody does! Don’t tie up the e-mail servers with file downloads, use Joomla’s Briefcase Add-on to share files with other users. Simply upload your files to your briefcase and then email your friend a message with a link and instructions to download the file.

The Briefcase Component even lets you share with the whole Public. So even non site members can download. Best for sharing with your friends and colleagues that have less knowledge of the internet. Just send them the link and they will download it to their local computer.

Digital Family Photos

Another great use for the service involves sharing digital pictures over the web. As those file sizes grow with enhancements in digital photography, having a password protected spot online from which to share the virtual family photo album comes in very handy.

In case you are at a loss as to what type of large files you may want to share:

  • Job files
  • Fonts
  • Resumes
  • Image files
  • Files you want to ‘transport’ from office to home (and vice-versa).
  • Use it to ‘back-up’ current projects.
  • Think up your own reason – I’m out of ideas.

File Sharing Software For Your Downloads

Various ones would love to share various files with friends, families and with the rest of the world. A website would be a good idea to do this but it would take time for people to upload and download stuff onto the websites. Thus, some software engineers and programmers have come up with software that allows people to share file and other documents with others. This software is the File Sharing Software which can also be used for downloads.

The file sharing software allows visitors to upload and/ or download files easily. There are other file sharing software that is designed to share files through the internet. This software enables uploading and downloading of files using various web browsers such as Mozilla, Netscape and/or Internet Explorer. The software helps the sharing of files with users, customers and partners. These people can either search and download files from your computer or upload files from theirs. Since it uses the internet, files from your computer can be accessible anywhere without having to purchase special software.

There are various features that this File Sharing Software has. Some of them offer what is known as the Bulletin Board System. Bulletin boards are mainly used to pass information to a larger population by posting a message. In the same way, File Sharing Software used for downloads offer these systems online where remote users can post messages which can be read by everyone who has access to your computer. This is mainly done through forums.

File Sharing Software for your download should also offer proper security measures for its users. Certain people should be given exclusive rights to access your computer. It is important to note that not everyone who is in contact with you is a good person. They may be sheep in wolves’ clothing. Some people may upload deadly viruses into your computer. This will lead to massive destruction of all your important files and folders. Eventually, this may also spread to other people’s computers being infected because of the number of downloads they make from your computer. Thus, security checks must be put in place. If possible, enable data encryption which helps protect businesses against site spoofing and data corruption.

Using File Sharing Software to carry out downloads is very simple, easy and fast method of sharing files. This is especially so if one uses web based file sharing software. The tools have already been prepared for one to download the files that they would like. The web has already offered these tools. There is no need for including more configurations to one’s site. All one has to do is to have the file sharing software on the site and people will begin downloading and uploading files.

File Sharing on Network

File sharing is a web based technology which has been with us since the late 1990s, at least in the sense that we mean today when we use the phrase file sharing. Obviously, people have been swapping information in the form of files ever since the days of the ARPANET, long before anyone ever imagined that there would someday be a large number of different file sharing networks which allowed people to upload and download just about any file of their choosing.
There are file sharing networks and file sharing services which have come and gone, such as the late, lamented Napster. While the company still exists, it is a very different thing than it was in its early 2000s heyday. However, other file sharing networks were already in existence at the time and along with other newer file sharing networks have stepped up in the years since to fill the void.
One of the more popular file sharing networks in use today is the Gnutella network (used by the popular file sharing programs LimeWire and BearShare, along with lesser-known clients including Lopster, the command line client Nap and others). Another very popular file sharing network which has been around for a while now is the FastTrack file sharing network, which is the basis for the well known clients Kazaa, Grokster and others. This is one of the more commonly used file sharing networks and as such has a lot of popular content; but it is also known for containing a lot of fake or corrupt files, as well as viruses disguised as a popular video or music file ? and some FastTrack clients are notorious for containing advertisements and spyware. Any file sharing program should be used cautiously in order to protect yourself from these kinds of security threats.
A relative newcomer to the file sharing scene is Soulseek, which uses its own network of servers. This file sharing application is gaining in popularity due to its ease of use and cross platform availability (Nicotine and other Soulseek clients are available for MacOS and Linux systems, as well as for Windows). While this file sharing network does not feature the ?swarming? capabilities of some other file sharing services, download speeds tend to be acceptable and the network is a good place to search for harder to find music. It is also relatively free of corrupt files and malware and has a ?download entire folder? feature.
Direct Connect is another of the newer file sharing networks. Direct Connect uses decentralized servers called ?hubs?. While not as heavily used as many of the other file sharing networks, it shows great promise. Many file sharing users choose to use a multipurpose client instead, such as eMule, which can connect to many different file sharing networks simultaneously; making it a lot easier to find a source for that file you?ve been looking for.
File sharing is a technology which is still somewhat young and many improvements both in terms of file sharing networks and file sharing clients to access these networks and provide for the uploading and downloading of files is sure to come. Whatever may come, it will certainly be interesting to see the continued development of file sharing.
